Driven by a small team of artists and advocates for change in a regional Australia, First Coat platforms the possibilities of collaboration; highlighting Queensland’s rich cultural environment.
In 2014 local creative space, Kontraband Studios partnered with Toowoomba Regional Council to present a three-day street art festival. The event left a public art legacy of 19 large-scale, outdoor murals throughout the heart of the city and provided a series of side events free for the public to attend.
First Coat Festival double it’s offerings in 2015, delivering 30 large scale murals, 14 free side events, a 100m long emerging artist production showcasing 26 emerging artists’ work and offered a live music program featuring 19 acts across two stages.
The 2016 festival cemented it’s ongoing partnership with Analogue Digital Agency; expanding to a ten days event which included their two-day creative symposium, The Design Conference. The extended program included two weekends of programmed events, featuring large-scale mural painting, live music performances, pop up retailers & boutique bars, night time projections, hands on creative workshops, interactive youth activities, art exhibitions & much more.
First Coat 2017 is on the horizon, with a continued link with our platinum partners, Grand Central Shopping Centre & Toowoomba Regional Council. Pulling back to a three-day event, held over the 19 -21 May, 2017, First Coat Festival is currently confirming mural locations and artists for the Toowoomba flagship event.
